Why do you feel tired after crying

Crying can be physically exhausting, even when you have not done anything physically demanding. Many people notice that the body feels heavy afterward, the eyes feel tired, the head may ache, and there is often a strong need to lie down or be quiet. This is not only an emotional reaction, but also a physiological response in the body.

When you cry, several systems are activated at the same time. The nervous system, breathing pattern, facial and throat muscles, hormones, fluid balance, and emotional brain networks are all involved. This is why crying can feel like a whole body event, especially when it is intense or connected to sadness, stress, frustration, pain, or emotional overwhelm.

Crying activates the stress response

Crying often happens when the body is already emotionally activated. It may occur during grief, conflict, pain, disappointment, stress, or relief. Before or during crying, the sympathetic nervous system may be active, meaning the body is preparing to handle emotional or physical strain.

When the body enters this state, several physiological reactions may occur:

  • heart rate may increase

  • breathing may become faster or uneven

  • muscles may tense

  • stress hormones may rise

  • the body may feel restless or activated

Afterward, the body may shift into the opposite phase, where activation drops. This transition can feel like sudden tiredness, emptiness, or heaviness. It is as if the nervous system has been running at high intensity and then needs time to recover.

Breathing changes during crying

During crying, breathing often changes significantly. Many people breathe in a broken, fast, or uneven pattern. Some hold their breath briefly, while others gasp or take deep inhalations between crying episodes. This affects oxygen, carbon dioxide, and the muscles around the chest and throat.

When breathing becomes irregular, the body has to work harder to stabilize itself again. This can contribute to the feeling of physical exhaustion afterward. In some people, fast or uneven breathing may also affect the balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood, which can cause dizziness, tingling, restlessness, or a heavy feeling in the body.

Typical breathing changes during crying include:

  • broken breathing

  • short gasps

  • faster breathing rate

  • tension in the throat and chest

  • deep sighs after crying

When crying settles, deep sighs or slower breathing often appear. This may be the body’s way of regulating itself back toward a calmer state.

The muscles work more than you think

Crying involves many small muscles. Facial muscles, the jaw, lips, eyelids, throat, ribcage, and diaphragm can all become active for an extended period. If the crying is intense, these muscles may tense and contract repeatedly. This can create local fatigue, especially around the eyes, forehead, jaw, and throat.

This is one reason why crying can feel physically draining. It is not necessarily large muscles doing heavy work, but many small muscles being activated together with a strong emotional response. Over time, this can contribute to headache, tired eyes, a tight throat, or pressure in the face.

Common physical reactions after crying include:

  • heavy or tired eyes

  • pressure in the forehead

  • soreness in the jaw or face

  • sore or tight throat

  • general heaviness in the body

These reactions are common and often result from the combination of muscle tension, breathing changes, and fluid shifts.

The eyes and sinuses are affected

When you cry, the tear glands produce tear fluid. Tears do not only run out of the eyes. They also drain through the tear ducts toward the nose. This is why crying can make the nose run, feel blocked, or create pressure in the face.

Blood vessels around the eyes may also widen. This can make the eyes red, swollen, and heavy. When the tissue around the eyes becomes irritated and fluid filled, the face can feel tired or puffy afterward.

Typical reactions in the eyes and nose include:

  • red eyes

  • swollen eyelids

  • runny nose

  • blocked nose

  • pressure around the eyes

This can also help explain why some people get headaches after intense crying. Pressure, muscle tension, and irritation around the eyes and nose can combine to create pain or discomfort.

Strong emotions require energy

Strong emotions place a real demand on the brain. When you cry, emotional networks in the brain are often highly activated. At the same time, the brain may be processing memories, thoughts, bodily signals, social context, and emotional regulation.

This can create mental fatigue. Just as long periods of concentration can make the body feel tired, long periods of emotional activation can also be exhausting. The brain uses energy to process what is happening, while the nervous system works to restore balance.

This is why people may feel empty, calmer, or completely drained after crying. For some, crying brings relief. For others, it mainly creates tiredness and a need for rest. Both responses are normal.

Parasympathetic activation can create sleepiness

After intense crying, the body often shifts toward a more parasympathetic state. The parasympathetic nervous system is associated with calm, digestion, and recovery. When this part of the nervous system becomes more active after stress or emotional activation, sleepiness can appear.

This may be one reason why some people feel calm after crying. The body moves from high activation into downregulation. That transition can feel like a biological release.

Signs of downregulation after crying may include:

  • lower heart rate

  • heavier body feeling

  • slower breathing

  • sleepiness

  • need for quiet or rest

This does not mean that crying always solves stress, but it can be part of the body’s way of regulating emotional load.

Why crying can cause a headache

Headache after crying can be caused by several mechanisms at the same time. Muscle tension in the face, jaw, neck, and scalp can contribute. Uneven breathing may affect carbon dioxide levels and blood vessel regulation. Nasal congestion and pressure around the sinuses can also add to the discomfort.

Crying often happens when a person is already stressed, tired, or dehydrated. In that state, the body may be more vulnerable to headache. If someone cries for a long time without drinking water or resting, the discomfort can become more noticeable.

Factors that may contribute to headache after crying include:

  • tension in the face and neck

  • blocked nose and pressure around the eyes

  • irregular breathing

  • fluid loss through tears and nasal drainage

  • emotional and mental strain

This type of headache usually improves with calm, fluid, sleep, or reduced stimulation.

What can help after intense crying

After crying, the body often needs regulation rather than more pressure. It can help to slow down, drink some water, breathe more calmly, and give the body time to settle. If the jaw, shoulders, or throat feel tense, gentle movement or relaxation can also be useful.

Some people need sleep after crying. Others need fresh air, a calm conversation, or time alone. What helps depends on why the crying happened and what the body needs in order to feel safe again.

Strategies that may help include:

  • drink some water

  • breathe more slowly and deeply

  • place a cool cloth over the eyes

  • relax the jaw, shoulders, and neck

  • take a calm walk if the body feels restless

  • rest if you feel drained

If crying, sadness, or exhaustion becomes frequent and affects daily life over time, it may be helpful to speak with someone you trust or contact a healthcare professional.
