Acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are a common cause of hospital admission and are often followed by a marked decline in physical activity, functional capacity, and quality of life. Even after discharge, many individuals remain highly inactive, increasing the risk of recurrent exacerbations, rehospitalisation, and premature mortality. A study published in Sensors in January 2026 examined how physical activity levels and clinical outcomes change in people with COPD during a structured rehabilitation period following hospitalisation.
