Depressive symptoms do not need to meet all criteria for major depression to affect daily life. Low mood, reduced interest, sleep problems, fatigue, self-criticism, and poor motivation may interfere with study, work, relationships, and ordinary routines. When persistent symptoms remain below the diagnostic threshold for major depressive disorder, the term subthreshold depression is often used.
